The Story

Such a huge change in the way trains operate requires extensive retraining for their drivers. Michael, Freightliner's Group Property Manager, knew they needed a purpose-built training academy. This would facilitate the ERTMS rollout on the Midland main line.

Having worked with Zentura to create just such a training facility for the East Coast Main Line, Michael turned to Zentura. Zentura helped Michael assess the feasibility of several locations, and as a result, Freightliner selected a location in Doncaster. Freightliner’s Ipswich academy had been created as a flagship design concept. We took this concept and adapted that design to suit the Doncaster space. This ensured that the new design was on brand and design was consistent across all their new spaces. As an old nightclub, Freightliner’s new academy needed extensive strip out works, new HVAC, lighting, suspended ceilings, Electrak and a raised access floor. We then installed partitioning, joinery & teapoints, flooring, decoration, and bespoke graphics. Finally, office furniture and audio/visual equipment were installed. The entire 8,000 sq/ft strip out and fit out was completed within 11 weeks. During the work, the project team kept Michael and his team well-informed through weekly video updates and regular meetings. This gave them complete peace of mind, despite not being able to attend site often. It also gave them the time and confidence they needed to focus on their day-to-day role. The completed academy has multiple adaptable training spaces. The simulator room provides an extremely realistic training environment for their drivers. There are also several breakout spaces to enable collaboration and relaxation. Throughout, the bespoke design features bold accents in brand colours and bespoke graphics. The space truly looks and feels like a home for Freightliner. Damon and his team now have the academy they need for the rollout of ERTMS throughout the midlands. Freightliner’s new space enables them to continue improving their services and keeps them at the forefront of their industry.
